How Do You Turn an Existing Apartment into a Smart Home Without Renovating?
Updated November 1, 2026
In most existing apartments you can add smart control without renovating: we install small controllers behind the switches you already have, strengthen the network, and connect everything to one local control system. The switches keep working as usual, and an app, automations and voice control are added on top.
What actually changes in the home?
From the outside, almost nothing. The switches, light fixtures and shutters stay. The change is behind the scenes: small components that let you control the same circuits from your phone, by time of day, by presence or by sensor.
The main steps
- Mapping: We go through the home and understand what is there: which switches, shutters, water heater and air conditioners, and what is already smart.
- Planning: We decide what is worth connecting first and how everything will behave. This is where the scenes are defined, for example "Leaving home" or "Night".
- Network: We check that the WiFi covers the whole home, and strengthen it if needed. Without a stable network, even the best system will disappoint.
- Installation: The work in the electrical panel and boxes is carried out by a licensed electrician. We design, program and connect the system.
- Training: We show everyone in the household how it works, and leave the switches as a natural backup.
What can be connected?
Lighting, shutters, the water heater, air conditioners, cameras, door and motion sensors, and sometimes also systems already in the home. We work with controllers from all the well-known brands, and in each home we check what is already installed and how to integrate it.
What to think about before you start
- Whether there is a neutral wire in the switch box (some controllers need one). This is checked on site.
- Whether there is physical room in the box for a controller.
- What matters to you to keep working when the internet is down.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a renovation or new wiring?
In most cases, no. The controllers fit into the existing switch boxes. If the assessment shows that a particular box is not suitable, we will suggest an alternative before we start.
What happens if the internet goes down?
The system runs locally in your home and keeps working at all times, as long as your router is on and broadcasting WiFi. The physical wall switch always keeps working, even if something happens to the controller, so your lighting always stays on. Phone notifications and remote access to your home from outside require a working internet connection. We take care of this service as part of a monthly fee.
Can I start with one room?
Yes. You can start with part of the home and expand later, with up-front planning ensuring everything connects to the same system.
